C3 WillCel spreadsheet

A real spreadsheet, right here.

A website about a spreadsheet person without a spreadsheet on it would be like a balance sheet that doesn’t balance. So here is WillCel: type numbers, write formulas, and watch everything downstream recalculate, with a formula engine written from scratch. It’s loaded with an example budget to play with.

Use the arrow keys to move between cells. Type to replace a cell, press F2 to edit it, Enter to confirm, and Escape to cancel. Tab moves right, and from the last column it leaves the grid.

Ready

On a phone? Tap a cell, then tap the formula bar (or the pencil) to type. Tap the same cell again to edit it in place.

D4 Help

Try these formulas.

Select an empty cell, then click a formula to drop it in. They’re written for the example budget, so if you’ve cleared it, hit “Load example” first.

When it says #…

#DIV/0!
Dividing by zero (or by an empty cell).
#REF!
A cell that isn’t on this sheet (columns A–L, rows 1–50).
#NAME?
A function or name WillCel doesn’t recognise. Typo?
#VALUE!
Doing sums with words, like ="apple"+1.
#N/A
Value not available.
#CIRC!
A circular reference: the cell depends on itself. Excel warns you; WillCel flags it right in the cell.
#ERROR!
The formula couldn’t be read. Check the brackets and quotes.

Functions WillCel knows

    Plus the operators + - * / ^ & %, comparisons = <> < > <= >=, ranges like A1:B5 or A:A, and absolute references like $B$7. Text comparisons ignore case, just like Excel.

Your sheet stays on your device. WillCel runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded; your work is saved in this browser’s local storage so it survives a refresh. Clearing your browser data clears the sheet.

A toy, but an honest one. The example budget is made up for illustration, and the 20% VAT line uses the UK standard rate (see VAT rates on GOV.UK). For real books, use proper accounting software or Excel, and get qualified advice for financial decisions.
